These are considered as the toughest of months for households as food stocks get depleted. It's especially tough for the most vulnerable groups such as vulnerable host community residents and internally displaced persons. Unfortunately, children, especially those under the age of five years old are bearing the greatest brunt of increasing level of household food insecurity as they face the threat of malnutrition. In World Vision nutrition centres, mothers bringing their children suffering from malnutrition are telling staff that they do not have enough to feed their children, their inability to afford food is amplified by the rising inflation. This lack of enough food consumption is driving high malnutrition in children. Naima, 16 months old, was brought to a World Vision Outpatient Therapeutic Programme (OTP) in South Darfur, weighing only 4.8 kilograms. In the OTP, funded by EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid - ECHO children like Naima are given nutrients-rich Plumpy Nut (a peanut-based paste) administered to children under five with severe acute malnutrition (SAM). In July of 2021, nutrition officers recorded 40 cases of severe acute malnutrition, and since January at least 200 SAM cases have been admitted in this one facility alone. According to the 2021 Sudan Humanitarian Needs Overview, about 7.3 million people need emergency assistance for life threatening needs.
</oembed>
