Her grandmother Leocadie uses pieces of wood from around their home to make the fire to cook the beans to eat. As a baby Divine was abandoned in the bushes in Kigali. Divine's grandmother Leocadie rescued and has been raising her. Divine, now 11-year-old, loves school. She dreams of being a doctor because of the kindness shown to her by a doctor when she was younger. Leocadie says, “She will say, ‘Grandma, I want to be like that doctor and take care of the young children.’” Leocadie knows that dream isn’t possible without education. And with so little income, there’s no telling how long Divine’s education can continue. For food, Leocadie, 67, works in the fields for others. “It is so exhausting for me,” she says. “If I don’t go, we won’t have anything to eat that day.” She also sells bananas from the trees on her land. Leocadie uses that meager money to pay for school fees, school uniforms, and other school expenses. The condition of their house also makes Leocadie anxious. The mud hut built by one of her sons, who has since died, isn’t structurally sound. The roof caved in over their cooking area. Holes in the roof and walls allow the cold and rain to come in. She worries one of the walls will collapse in on them as they sleep. Unlike other farmers in rural Africa who long for rain. “I never wish that it rains actually,” Leocadie says.
