Chansa's story: A talkative 5 year old, Chansa has lots of personality and energy. Last year he was sponsored through World Vision. His grandmother, Esnart says that when they hear that news: “It was a celebration of the day because that is a sign to say we are now two families in Zambia and in America where we can share things.” Chansa tells people that he has a sponsor who he calls Muzungu (white person) Max. That’s Max Moser, a freelance videographer, who met Chansa and his family last year. Max sent an extra gift to the family, which they used to buy a book bag, his school uniform, and a blanket. Through sponsorship, the family also receives Gift-in-kind items such as shirts, books, and pencils. That’s money that Esnart can use for other things now. And when he visited again this year, Max brought gifts including a soccer ball and matching Cleveland Cavalier shirts for himself and Chansa. Esnart says, “Sponsorship has brought so much light on our lives as well as on the lives of our children.” That light shines in the form of borehole wells that are nearby. It’s easy for children to stay clean and to keep the family’s clothes clean. It gleams through the gifts of goats and chickens, which lighten the burdens families face. And sponsorship ensures that Esnart’s children and grandchildren have a bright future through access to education. She says, “Sponsorship has really brought so much light to us that we’re able to see where we’re going.” A gift that Esnart shares with her family is the gift of generosity. As a World Vision caregiver she visits many vulnerable families in the community. When she sees someone facing special need, she says, “If I do not have money that I can give to that person then I just think to myself, maybe I should give this person a chicken so that he can start keeping chickens.” She wants to empower them as she once was put on a path to a better life through a gift of World Vision chickens. She models that generosity to her sons and her grandchildren. Chansa learned to share through Esnart and his uncle Resheal. Now Chansa shares with and cares for his 17-month-old sister, Beauty. “Chansa does take care of Beauty. He shows so much love for her,” says Esnart. If he finds something to eat, he shares it with his baby sister, even holding it aside if she’s not around.
