SHARE assignment: n/a Summary: Ruse* tells her story: ""Once, there was a neighbor who owned the brothel house and she visited my mother and asked if my mother wanted to sell my Zhin (virginity) because it's [worth a] high price and that this would help the family. My mother and I seriously discussed about selling my Zhin, and we cried because we didn't want to do so. I finally decided, by myself, to sell my Zhin because I wanted my mother to be healthy, and I wanted to help my family's living conditions to be improved so that we could have enough food to eat. My two younger siblings were so small. As I am the oldest daughter of three siblings, I have to do whatever in order to help the family."" Ruse's mother sold her virginity when she was 13 years old for $400. She began to work in a brothel until a police raid cleared all the brothel houses where she worked. She moved to Siem Reap with her mother and became a sex worker there. She believed her life would never change. Then police raided the brothel where she worked and arrested her mother. Her mother was sent to jail and Ruse was sent to the Trauma Recovery Center. Her brother went to Bamboo Shoot Center for street children. Today at 22, Ruse is the mother of her family. She takes care of her siblings and four friends who live together in an apartment. She is the Nanny to two children in Phnom Penh.
