My mother gave me a portion of her used ragged shari (traditional women's attire) and showed me how to use it", said Suraiya (19), a former child forum member. She adds, "I was embarrassed to handle the whole thing for a long time! We did not have any washroom where we can clean or change the clothes, supply of clean water was a high challenge." It is difficult to find a proper place to let the washed clothes dry. The scarcity of a proper place to dispose of the menstrual hygiene kits/materials is also a serious issue that badly affects the life of the girls residing in the urban slum settlement. It was a curse rather then blessings here at the slum. But now girls have all the WASH facilities like healthy toilet, bath place, enough water supply, and proper drainage system as well as disposal bin at door. Curse is considered as blessings to the girls of the slum. ------------------------------------------- It is one of the big slums at the capital city of Bangladesh, where World Vision Bangladesh is serving to bring sustainable change in the lives of the most marginalized people. Beside running its Sponsorship programme World Vision is running significant WASH activity there from the very beginning and along with its partners has established 48 toilets, 89 water lines, 36 water reserves, and 29 bathing places for more than 500 HH of this community. The changed atmosphere as well as behavioral change of the community people is also remarkable which reflects in the joyful faces of the children.
