Anuradha was married off as a child bride when she was only 13 years old and became a mother at the age of 14. Anuradha is delighted when girls come and thank her for helping stop their marriages. One of the child, who was protected from child marriage, recently completed her schooling and is pursuing higher studies. “As a child, I always wanted to study and become a teacher. I did not understand what marriage is all about until I turned 19. Now I know that this is wrong and ruins the lives of girls. Therefore, I told myself and decided not to keep quiet about it. As part of the Child Protection Unit in my village, I’m advocating against gender inequality and child marriage”, she says proudly as her husband stands beside her. Having been instrumental in stopping five child marriages in her village, Anuradha was recognised by the District Collector and was accorded a bravery award for stopping these child marriages.
