A key piece, the chain tong, has broken and a hydraulic pipe has burst. They leave behind a very disappointed community that night. “When my mother told me there were issues with drilling the borehole, I was very disappointed,” said Charity Ng’oma, 13. “The water we use now is very dirty. We get sick often. I am also usually late for school since where we get the water is a bit far.” Eunice Phiri, 30, and the mother of four is frustrated, “I felt too much pain in my heart. I was looking forward to having our own borehole in this village,” she says. “We rely on water from a swamp since the nearest borehole is always congested so you have to be away from home for many hours. This was our chance at getting clean water.” “I was excited that finally I was going to get clean water only to be disappointed at the end that there was too much mud or something,” says Thereza Banda, 31, and the mother of three. “I am tired of diarrhea in my household. I need clean water. I hope today we will get good news.” Fadresi Soko, 33, and the mother of 7 children, three of whom are adopted says, “I am very disappointed because I thought yesterday everything was going to be finalized. I don’t know if today they will fix the problem or not, but this village needs clean water. The water we drink you cannot look at it twice. It is too contaminated. The children and even us adults are always sick.” “I couldn’t believe it when they said they couldn’t finish yesterday. All my hopes for clean water were shattered. I was looking forward to it. We cannot keep on relying on the swamp for water. It is unhealthy,” says Memory Ng’oma, 42, the mother of six.
