The Sagar Health Project is a five year project that aims at improving the health status of pregnant women, lactating mothers and children under five in the target areas by building the whole area’s capacity on the indicators of Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition (MCHN) through awareness creation, strengthening service delivery and strengthening systems. It is working in 174 villages in a particular block of Sagar district, which is in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Despite the remarkable economic growth of the state in recent years, the poverty rate remains high and statistics show that this area falls short of the national average, on indicators of MCHN. As per data from National Family Health Survey 4 (2015-16), more infants die in Madhya Pradesh per 1,000 births than in any other Indian state (IMR is 51 per 1000 births). And the same holds true for children under five years of age (65 per 1000 live births). The statistics for mothers don’t fare any better as the Maternal Mortality Ratio in the state is 173 per 100,000 live births which is much higher than the national average of 130. Moreover, about 75 percent of population in Sagar comprises of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other backward classes thereby increasing the vulnerability of the place.
