SUMMARY: Gertrude Jimu (43) Daughter: Progress (15) A few years ago, Gertrude had hit a low in life. She was overwhelmed by her family’s poverty, her husband was living far away for work but rarely returning home, and when he did, they argued. She didn’t think anything could change. But then she got involved with ENSURE programs, and things started to change. She was already a community caregiver, but in 2016, she was elected to be a village health worker, moving about the community and helping families adapt healthy practices. She also got involved in CARE groups, training group leaders on how to take care of themselves and their babies to reduce malnutrition and diseases through exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months, getting immunizations, and registering pregnancies early. In 2016 she got involved in the Village Savings and Loan groups, and the savings group started to turn her life around. With her first shareout, she was able to buy a wardrobe for her clothes. She went on to build a latrine and even a brick house. Her husband even took notice and began returning home more often. She recently bought a kitchen cabinet, and he was so proud of her that he was bragging to his friends at all that his wife had accomplished. Now they have a much more loving relationship, she’s able to feed her family and pay her children’s school fees, and she’s hopeful for the future. She’s now part of a poultry producing group, and she’s highly motivated in her work as a village health worker, as she is responsible for more than 160 households in her community, usually visiting about 60 a month.
