Health When Grace Mukoma, 10 yr-old boy, gets sick and they can afford it, he goes to Luse Lua Nzambi clinic. The name means, �God�s Mercy.� The nurse examines Grace. Weighs him, takes his temperature. Grace is small for his age. He�s 24 kilos (53 lbs.) A boy his age should be about 33-35 or 72 lbs. According to the nurse malnourishment likely caused his lack of growth. He�s not alone. 72% of the patients at this clinic are malnourished. They know Grace well here. They�ve known him since the day he was born. His mother was on the way to the clinic after going into labor. She was walking. She didn�t make it. Grace was born on the side of the road. She carried him to the clinic where they cut the cord. The nurse says he knows Grace is from a very poor family. Among the poorest. He says they haven�t eaten meat or drank milk since January. The nurse says he�s never seen him in different clothes and knows he�s not sleeping in a good place and doesn�t have a mosquito net. Today Grace is complaining of a headache and a stomach ache. The clinic runs some tests. Later in the day we return to the clinic to get the results of his tests. It�s determined that he has malaria and worms. Background Grace lives with his widowed mom, Mbombo Elize, sister Harriet, 7, and an extended family of relatives, including his widowed grandmother, Kapinga Godelive, 66. Mbombo has had 4 children, the first when she was 15. 2 died during the time they had to run away because of the war. Now it�s just Grace and his sister Harriet, 7. They live in the Kasai Centrale province in a place called Katoka. It�s a rural community. Grace and his family had to run when war broke out in the DRC. His father was killed.
