SUMMARY: Jose Solomon, 45, is secretary of the Agua Caliente Norte child labor committee. Gloria Argentina, 39, is his wife; Arnahum Solomon, 13, is their younger son. Not pictured are son Rommel, 15, daughter Yeny, 18, and Geronimo Cuerliano, 14, Solomon’s foster son. Solomon: “In this community, we have made advances against child labor this year. This is the second year for the Educational Bridge. More fathers and mothers know their responsibilities to their children and are not bringing them to the coffee farm.” “The first year, there were fewer, but this year all the little ones are at the bridge and more of the older kids, too.” “I tell parents that education is the only legacy they can leave their children. Many of them have no land to leave them.” Solomon’s sons are in 7th and 9th grade and are taking alternative education, going to school on the weekends. One goes in the morning and other in the afternoon. They help at home during the week, and so does Geronimo, the foster son. Solomon’s family grows coffee and corn. Coffee is the cash crop, but corn is mostly for their own consumption.
