Summary: Collins has lived with his grandmother, Sofia Wanjiko Mbogwa since he was a year and a half old. He’s 10 years old now. His mother was unable to care for her infant son, so sent him back to live with his grandmother in Mwala, Kenya. Sofia had already raised seven children of her own. Now she’s raising three grandchildren. Her son, Joffrey—who works as a World Vision Community Development Facilitator—also lives in the home. Sofia struggles to earn enough money for school fees for her grandchildren. But things are looking up. She just participated in World Vision’s Empowered Worldview training. Through that she learned how to plant and grow crops more efficiently and successfully. She’s hoping she’ll be able to grow some cash crops this year to help her earn more money. Another benefit the family has received is a nearby World Vision water kiosk where they can collect clean water. Before that kiosk was built, the family had to walk two and a half hours to get water. Despite the struggles and sometimes being sent home from school because he didn’t have the needed school materials, Collins consistently ranks in the top five in his class. It’s just the life challenges that could prevent him from being successful. He’s a bright, hard-working young man who helps his grandmother by doing chores like picking fruit from the mango tree and gathering firewood. Collins is full of life and curiosity and ready with a quick smile. Sofia, who’s an evangelist, prays that Collins will have wisdom and knowledge. She wants him to be a respectable person. She wants him to be generous and someone who will help others and that he continues to know God. She believes that sponsorship will change Collins’ life. “Through the communications (with the sponsor), it will help him grow psychologically.” Faith is the foundation of their lives.
</oembed>
