In its second phase, the AP has 3,700 sponsored children, many sponsored by LCBC, a large American church in Minnesota. The Kalawa area has suffered from numerous droughts over the years. The poverty index is 64 percent, compared to the national poverty index of 40 percent. Sponsorship supports the spiritual nurture of children and meets their medical needs. Children are tracked through an inventive app that connects to World Vision’s Horizon system. Christian witness is key to World Vision’s work in Kalawa and is integrated into every project. Staff work to empower the church and faith leaders, nurture children through Bible clubs, and ensure Sunday School teachers have proper training. The Transformed Church for Transformed Community (TCTC) program began in 2014 as a pilot project and is now active in 12 APs in Kenya. “If you reach the church,” says Bernard Kivuva, “you can reach the most people.” Through TCTC, pastors and Sunday school teachers have been trained and given materials to guide children’s learning and get them excited about Jesus. The children also go to Bible camps. In 2015, pastors took part in Celebrating Families training. To improve livelihoods, World Vision has sent many pastors to Yatta to meet Bishop Titus and Rev. Agnes Masika. They come home as farming champions and begin to work with farmers to dig water pans and plant high-value crops. Many staff, including driver Titus Kyumba, came from Tseikuru AP, which was frequently visited by LCBC. The staff are high-energy and passionate, and they love children and one another.
