The odor clung to her, further isolating her from classmates fortunate enough to continue in school. Even when she had precious play time, they shunned her because of the smell of shrimp. She argued frequently with her mother, Sokhina Begum, who also labored for hours at the same shrimp depot. Ima wanted to return to school. Then World Vision opened their Child Friendly Learning and Recreation Center as part of the child protection program in Bangladesh. The center offered Ima a way forward. She and other girls began attending the center in 2017, studying the curriculum they missed while they were working. Now 13, Ima is back in school in grade 5. She goes to the center now for help with her homework. “When I go to the center, then I can complete my homework there.” World Vision also provided Sokhina with fabrics to start a business, enabling her to leave the shrimp processing depot herself. The family who used to have two meals a day if they were lucky now regularly gets three meals. As part of developing new employment opportunities, World Vision staff work with each family to create a vision board of dreams for the family. Then they come up with a development plan for how to achieve those dreams. Working from home means Sokhina also has more time to care for and spend with her children. “My mom arranges books in my bag,” says Ima. “She walks with me to school.” Sokhina also attends World Vision’s Positive Parenting trainings where she learns new ways to communicate with her children.
