She has to walk 30 minutes of this small mountain path everyday to reach her school. Suhani, 12, is studying in the 8th standard. She has an elder sister and a younger brother. Her mother is a housewife and her father works in a private company at Pauri town. Before World Vision started working in Malli Village, where Suhani lives, there was no toilet in the village. Villagers practiced open defecation and it was dangerous especially from leopards and tigers attack. Pauri has high case of leopards and tigers attacks. Now, they have a toilet in the house compound and Suhani feels much safer. Because of the Remedial Education Centre (REC) set up in the community by World Vision, Suhani is doing much better in school too. REC is an innovative approach and community-led process that seeks to ensure learning support to children of age 6-14 years, in the community to inculcate basic knowledge about reading, writing, math and life skills. Every study centre has a teacher and free classes are given for two hours. It is to ensure that children attain appropriate age learning and also develop foundational, essential and applied life skills.
