She lives with her grandmother, Kapinga Godelive, 66 and her 3 brothers: 1-Francois Ngondo, 14 2-Mbuyamba Phillip, 9 3-Beya Honore, 6 Kananga, DRC Democratic Republic of Congo. Play Kapinga and Ngalula Vicky, 12, (just call her Vicky) love to be together. Sometimes fetching water, sometimes doing each other’s hair, walking or singing and dancing. This afternoon they sit under a mango tree while Vicky combs and braids Kapinga’s hair. They chat like girlfriends do. Later, outside of Kapinga’s house they sing a song in French and dance in a circle. “Good morning my friend, good morning. Come and play with me!” Inside Kapinga’s four-room house the walls are paint splattered. There is little furniture except for two small tables and an old cabinet. On top sits a dusty old television. A peek behind reveals that it has no cord. Kapinga sits on a low, wooden bench against one wall reading an old school exercise book of English lessons. “Good morning my friends, good morning.” Her English is good in spite of a mispronunciation here and there. High up on the wall to the right is a crucifix. It’s as battle worn as the rest of the house. Light streams in through the numerous holes in the tin-sheeted roof. In the yard outside, the house is ringed on all sides with gardens of potato and cassava leaves, sorrel and sugarcane among other things. In one corner of the yard a few visitors gather on homemade chairs under a thatched-roof patio. Across the compound the afternoon sun throws light on the smaller of the two buildings there. In chalk, just below the roof line are the words, “Il n’ya pas de rose sans epines.” There is no rose without thorns. Home Life Her family is living with her grandmother since her dad died.
