Hector Mendoza, 32 /Red Bull shirt Josemeth, 1 ½ years / pink sweater “I’ve been working in Colombia almost her whole life. The first six months after she was born, I was away working. I don’t want to be separated from her and my wife again. “Our home is far away, near Lara state, about a 12-hour bus ride. I finally saved up enough money to buy bus tickets for us, but the bus broke down after six hours and we had to find another way to get here to the border.” “My wife is buying tickets now to go to Bogota and then Cali. I have a job waiting for me there.” “If things get better in Venezuela, I’d love to go back. I have a piece of land near my mom and I’d like to have a house on it. But for now, at least we’re together, even though we’ve lost everything else. World Vision partners with Fundacion Venezolanos en Cucuta, which provides hot meals for breakfast and lunch and other services to migrants. The volunteer-run organization sometimes feeds 1,000 people a day. World Vision delivers staple foods that kitchen volunteers cook and serve. Geraldine Romero, program administrator, is a Venezuelan college professor who took a leave of absence to organize the soup kitchen and aid distribution center. Back in Venezuela, classes were suspended because of strikes and power outages, she said. “I’ve been so surprised at the help we’ve gotten from partners like World Vision as well as companies and individuals. When we need something to help the migrants, somebody always steps up to lend a hand,” she says.
</oembed>
