Sumit Negi, 11, is in the 6th standard. He has an elder sister. His mother is a housewife and his father works in a private company in Delhi. Before World Vision came to Pali Gaon where Sumit lives, the village had no toilets. Drinking water was hard to access. The children in the village had no interest in education and school drop-out rate was high. So much have changed since World Vision started working in the village. Now every house in the village has toilets. World Vision has worked hard to provide drinking water. Parents were informed and sanitized through various trainings: on healthy practices and the importance of education. Remedial Education Centre (REC) was set up in many villages in Pauri. REC is an innovative approach and community-led process that seeks to ensure learning support to children of age 6-14 years, in the community to inculcate basic knowledge about reading, writing, math and life skills. Every study centre has a teacher and free classes are given for two hours. It is to ensure that children attain appropriate age learning and also develop foundational, essential and applied life skills.
</oembed>
