SUMMARY Shyamoli’s artwork covers the front wall at Shyamoli’s home. Mostly they’re colorful landscapes she’s drawn. But for a while she didn’t have time for art. In 2012, Shyamoli’s mother abandoned the family leaving the girl and her father, Abdul, alone. Abdul pulled a rented rickshaw for work and sometimes he worked as a day laborer unloading ships. But he didn’t earn enough, so in April 2016, Shyamoli dropped out of school and went to work in a bakery. Her job was to pack and seal the crackers in their plastic wrap. She melted the wax over an open flame. Even in factories filled with open flames, Bangladeshi women must wear their long flowing scarves, which can dip dangerously close to the fire. “I had no other choice to send her to work. I was struggling to manage money or to afford food for the family,” Abdul says. “When Shyamoli didn’t work, we struggled financially.” In 2017, World Vision staff approached Abdul and explained the dangers of child labor. He agreed with what they said, but answered, “I am poor. How shall I manage expenses?” World Vision provided a conditional cash grant of 1000 taka (nearly $12) per month to help with Shyamoli’s educational expenses. It’s conditional on Shyamoli being in school. Abdul agreed and Shyamoli returned to school in April 2017 starting in grade 3. World Vision also helped Abdul by purchasing a rickshaw for him, so he no longer has to rent one. He’s able to earn 300 to 400 ($3.50 to $4.75) taka per day now. World Vision staff also worked with Shyamoli and Abdul on creating a vision board for their family. The vision boards are a part of World Vision's child protection program in Bangladesh. World Vision staff work alongside families to set short-term, mid-term, and long-term goals. Some are easily achievable while others are stretch goals. Then together they come up with an action plan to achieve these goals
</oembed>
