The CFS is near his home in Central Kasai Province, Kananga, DRC. At the CFS, children jump rope using homemade ropes, sing, dance, perform dramas, and watch videos. Grace loves to go to the Tshilumba CFS. It is two buildings surrounded by palm trees. Out back, there’s a row of 8 latrines built by World Vision. Today, there are about 40 kids outside. The morning light is soft on the tall grass, and kids are dancing and performing acrobatic tricks. Grace is small but energetic. He loves to show off how limber he is, doing bends, twists, handstands, and backflips. Grace also loves dancing. “I feel at ease when I’m dancing with my friends, and most importantly, it makes me forget about the war.” “When I’m dancing among my friends, I feel very happy and I forget the past.” "When I’m dancing, I’m not alone. I forget all the things during the war.” GRACE'S STORY, by Tom Costanza Background Grace lives with his widowed mom, Mbombo Elize, sister Harriet, 7, and an extended family of relatives, including his widowed grandmother, Kapinga Godelive, 66. Mbombo has had 4 children, the first when she was 15. 2 died during the time they had to run away because of the war. Now it’s just Grace and his sister Harriet, 7. They live in the Kasai Centrale province in a place called Katoka. It’s a rural community. Grace and his family had to run when war broke out in the DRC. His father was killed. His mother and her 4 children ran about 2 kilometers down the road from his house towards the Lualua River. They hid there for about 3 months. Unfortunately, because of a lack of food and disease, Grace’s brother and a sister died. After about 3 months Grace and his family hesitantly made their way back to their house.
