At that point, though, he needed to begin contributing to the family income just as his older brothers—ages 17 and 14—had already done. Now Arafat works in a lathe machine shop from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. six days a week to bring home 500 taka (a little less than $6 USD). This helps provide food for his family since his parents’ income can’t feed the entire family. But a year ago, Arafat joined World Vision’s Child Friendly Learning and Recreation Center (CFLRC) in his community. The CFLRC is a big part of World Vision’s child protection work in Bangladesh. Now he’s receiving catch-up education using regular classroom textbooks. He’ll be able to test soon to see if he’s ready to return to school at the grade 6 level. Being able to continue his education would serve Arafat’s dream to be a police officer.
