STORY: Francis Mubanga met Euphrasia Katongo and fell in love. He pursued her and convinced her to marry him a short time later. But that love quickly turned into a tough marriage, which translated to a tough home for their four children that came in the years to follow. They fought, and when she or their children made mistakes, things got ugly. “In our home, wed used to use very bad words when a child makes a mistake,” says Francis, 32. “We would use very harsh words, and sometimes we would beat up the child. Sometimes when my wife did something wrong, I would lose my mind, and sometimes I would actually beat her up.” Twenty-four-year-old Euphrasia began to question her decision. She says, “That was a very painful experience for me. There were times when I regretted getting married, and if I had stayed with my parents, I’d be happier, and I’d make my own decisions, and nobody would interfere with my decisions.” Patrick certainly had his way of doing things, and that translated to how he farmed as well, as he used the traditional techniques he thought were best. “We just used to farm anyhow, according to what we knew,” Francis says. “Before, we would just cultivate the land — we didn’t know the measurements to use when plowing our land, and we believed in clearing the land by burning whatever grass was there and preparing the grass for the next farming season. In due course, we learned we were destroying the land. “The yields used to be very small because the soil was very poor because it was burnt, and the nutrients had been killed. Also, because the timing wasn’t followed, we would plant at any time, and sometimes the rains would have gone, and the crops needed more water, and
