Question: Globally, 91 percent of children attend primary school. What percentage of refugee children attend primary school?

Answer: Fifty percent.

Even when host countries provide educational opportunities for refugee children, only about half are able to attend school. Often, children need to work to help provide for their families, especially in countries that don’t grant work visas to adults. In other circumstances, children may not have significant documentation required – birth certificates and passports can often be lost during times of war, there may be language barriers, or insufficient means of transportation to get to school. Girls, children with disabilities, and older students are most at risk of being out of school.
